Phase 1: Collect Data
In the first phase, we ask faculty to submit information from their Mason Core course, such as a syllabus and assignment description(s), along with a sample of student work. The sample of student work should demonstrate performance on the specific learning outcome(s) for the Mason Core area that is being assessed. Phase 1 spans two academic years to improve sampling potential within the Core area and mitigate cohort effects.

Phase 3: Reflect / Refine Practices
In the third phase, faculty members and department leaders reflect on the assessment findings and what they mean in relation to the courses they are teaching. Faculty members will have the opportunity to engage in various professional development opportunities to refine their practices (e.g., assignment design) in an effort to further support student learning.

Phase 2: Assess / Share Findings
In the second phase, the student work and course information (i.e., data) is de-identified and scored using the rubric for its respective Mason Core area. Then, OIEP summarizes and shares the findings in aggregate with faculty members and department leaders who teach courses in that area.
